Foxes in the City: Navigating Urban Wilderness

At the end of 2024 I went for a walk and discovered a fox. I had been looking for foxes in the area for a long time.

In January 2025 it snowed a lot, which is unusual for the area and I was very lucky to meet the fox in the snow. And it was not only the one fox, but two, see for yourself in the video below!

Not just one, even two!

Foxes in Berlin

My first encounter with a fox cub happened in 2022. I knew there was a den nearby and hoped to catch a glimpse of the pups. Unfortunately, I didn’t see any cubs—only the vixen, carrying a large prey item in her full snout, which she brought into the den.

In 2024, I returned to the same spot, well camouflaged and full of hope. But once again, I had no luck. I was already heading back when, suddenly, a fox cub appeared right in front of me! Within moments, the vixen arrived, placing herself between us. The cub had vanished in an instant.

I slowly backed away, while the vixen stared at me intently. She watched me for a long time, but gradually seemed to relax. To my amazement, she then approached—coming as close as two metres to inspect me. My heart was pounding! After a moment, she turned, searched for her cub, and gently signalled it to come out. The cub emerged, the vixen retreated—and I had a few quiet minutes alone with the little one.

This all happened in a big city, and you can really feel the difference compared to the countryside. These urban animals have already become somewhat accustomed to people.

Would you like a shorter version for social media as well?

After that I could take some more photos and then it disappeared. An encounter that I will never forget.
